Course Description

The Baltimore Chinese School teaches Chinese to children from preschool and up. Our curriculum and course offerings have been developed to engage our students in active learning the language and culture of China, based on age-appropriate topics that are relevant to their daily life. Interesting activities are designed to develop students' communicative abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese.

REGULAR CHINESE CLASSES (Kindergarten - 9th grade)

The regular Chinese classes are for students who come from Chinese-speaking family. It is designed to help students who grow up in a Chinese speaking environment to acquire their heritage language through formal instruction. Students need to meet grade level standards before they move onto the next level. By the end of the 9th grade, students should posses the ability in listening, speaking, and writing Chinese, and passing AP Chinese and SATII Chinese exams.

LEARNING CHINESE AS SECOND LANGUAGE

The following Chinese classes are for students who are from non-Chinese- speaking family. Classes are designed to help students who grow up in a non-Chinese-speaking environment to acquire Chinese as a second language through the active learning.

Chinese for beginner (for Ages 3 - 5)

Our beginner class is designed to expose young students to the Chinese language and culture through words, nursery rhymes, very simple sentences, song and games. Students will be introduced to the basic Chinese four tones, radicals, writing strokes and most common characters. Milestones: greeting and counting in Chinese, pointing out and naming sample subjects, learning colors, measure words, following instructions. Students finished beginner class can move to 1st grade bilingual class.

Textbook: New Concept Chinese

1stgrade (age 6 and up) , 2ndgrade and 3rd grade Chinese as second language (CSL)

These courses are designed to teach students with a formal learning of Chinese. Students will learn Chinese phonics, Chinese conversation, and writing Chinese characters. English instruction is used to facilitate learning.

Text book: Standard Chinese

Chinese for adult

This course is designed to adults who have completed less than 10 hours of Mandarin Chinese and would like to acquire functional Chinese for business and/or pleasure.

Textbook: suggested by the instructor

ELECTIVE CLASSES

Painting

The course is designed to develop the capacities of perception, expression and invention of the pupils. It covers a wide range of artistic fields which bring into play the forms in their drawing and painting.



马立平中文教材实验班

从2006年秋季起,巴尔的摩中文学校在一年级开设了马立平中文教材实验班。马立平教材是根据直接认字法的理念而编写。该教材注重学生的阅读理解能力。课文内容生动活泼,易学易懂。通过循序渐进地学习,学生第一年的词汇量可达300+。

2010 - 2011 学年学校计划开设那些马立平中文班?
一年级计划开设二个新班, 二年级二个班,三年级二个班, 四年级二个班, 五年级一个班

各班有人数限制吗?
马立平中文班每班学生人数不超过20人,额满为止。若报名超五人以上,学校将在有师资的条件下增设班级。

四年级以上设那些班?
学校不准备"中途"开四年级以上班级。 原因在于,马立平教材从一年级起就完全脱离拼音教授汉字,四年级的教材建立于学生已掌握认读900 汉字的基础之上。 未曾使用过马立平一,二, 三年级教材的学生,如直接学高年级教材, 要做到没有拼音却要认读大量词汇的学习要求, 会有很大困难。为保证教学质量,避免因学习压力造成学生丧失对学中文的兴趣和自信心,学校计划高年级班一律从低年级升入。

报马立平中文班有什么条件吗?
对所有报名生的最低要求是学生应具备家庭生活中需要的最基本的普通话听说能力。 报一年级的学生不需要有任何中文认读, 写作, 或汉语拼音能力。直接报二年级以上的学生,需经任课教师面试评估通过后,并由教师指定适应学生水平的班级,方可报名。计划投报我校马立平中文班的转班学生和家长们要有心理准备,由其他教材班转入马立平教材班,学生所适应的马立平教材班就读年级往往比现在其他教材班就读年级低一年。

若家庭语言是广东, 闽南等地方言, 可以上马立平中文班吗?
马立平中文教材是完全针对说普通话的学生创作的。 其家庭作业光盘中的语音部分全部以标准普通话录制。教师用普通话讲课。 若家长不讲普通话, 学生就不能得到正确的指点, 也没有听说普通话的家庭环境, 会影响学生的学习, 造成学生因学习成绩不好而自卑。 若在家讲广东, 闽南等方言的家长有条件为孩子创造学讲普通话的环境, 家长应引导孩子学会普通话, 然后报考马立平中文班。

2010 - 2011 学年的报名什么时候开始?
本学期结束前的前2周,即6月6日,6月13日,开学后,班级若有空位,可继续报名。

家长和学生要亲自到校报名吗?
可以从学校网站下载报名表,连同报名费和学费,放假前交到学校报名处。

报名后何时可以拿到新学期的教材?
由学校统一订购的教材要在开学时才能具备。 若家长愿意利用假期帮助孩子自学补课,可以从Stanford 中文学校直接邮购。 一至四年级的教材包括一本三册合订的课本,两本作业本,三套字卡,一张光盘。购买时请详细说明所需年级的教材。Stanford 中文学校的网址是 www.mychineseschool.com

家长谈马立平中文教材

美中实验学校马立平中文一年级班张侨予的家长张丹, Peter Wobus

我们的儿子张侨予(Joseph Wobus)自五岁就进中文学校学中文, 断断续续学了两年,结果很不理想。不仅没学到要求的语言内容, 还造成了对学中文的极度厌烦和恐惧, 差点又要休学了。 五岁以前, 他与妈妈对话全部用中文。 上学后, 因学校英文语言的环境势力, 加上我们有时不得已用英语与他交谈学校的事, 放松了对他的要求, 他逐渐就不愿说中文了。在中文学校学习后形成的对中文的反感更使他对中文谈虎色变。离开拼音,没几个字能认识。一说写字就不耐烦,一催做作业,就发脾气,说起学中文,家里就是一团紧张的气氛, 个个"剑拔弩张",真是一场场势力搏斗。孩子学中文没有一点乐趣和兴趣。 妈妈是学语言和教育出身的, 但在孩子的中文学习上却无能为力,恨铁不成钢。看到这么小的孩子,牺牲了一个应该是充满童趣的星期六去学那个干巴巴的中文,已经很可怜了,那里忍心去"逼"孩子呢。

去年初, 通过一个偶然的机会,我们了解到马立平编写的中文教材, 妈妈就订购了一套, 在家试教孩子。 我们一下就看到, 孩子的好奇心很快就调动起来了, 一口气学了好几课. 懂教育的妈妈立即意识到, 若在一个集体的环境里, 大家相互影响,相互竞争,孩子们学这套教材的效果一定很好。 果不其然, 孩子自去年秋季进入一年级班学习以来, 一课比一课学得好,学得很扎实, 从未掉过队。与过去相比, 有了翻天覆地的变化: 由原来班里困难最大的学生成为班里的优秀学生。 当然, 这一变化与当老师的妈妈在家里抓得紧, 随时督促和鼓励是分不开的。 但是, 从孩子的切身经历和我们对孩子在兴趣上, 动机上, 和主动性上的观察, 我们认为马立平的教材是孩子发生这些转变的主要原因。 没有这套优秀的教材, 我们做父母的还会在迷惘中不知所措。

两周前, 妈妈与孩子给在北京的外公外婆打电话, 妈妈请孩子在电话上为老人们念念课文。孩子没有畏缩, 用中文出谜语(都是他学过的课文), 请外公猜,标准普通话说得清清楚楚。外公都猜对了,孩子很高兴,问外公还要不要猜。外公说要,于是孩子又出谜语,一直把他学过的所有课文念完才罢。外公有些耳背,有的句子或词没听清,一问孩子,他就把外公没听清的地方重复一遍。这说明孩子没有在盲目地念课文,而是在有意识的与他人交流 -- 用中文交流! 这把在地球另一边的外公外婆惊诧得高兴万分,激动不已, 乐不可支,连声夸奖! 要知道, 外公外婆还从没听过孩子用中文讲话。 去年他们来美探亲, 孩子没有跟他们讲过一句中文! 作为中国语言文学水平很高的外公, 因外孙放弃说中文非常失望,非常焦急,这次听到外孙能用中文与他通电话, 兴奋得半天睡不着觉! 马立平教材中极其适合少儿的课文,使我们的孩子和其他很多不愿意或者不习惯说中文的孩子们都能张嘴说中文了, 我们感到特别的欣慰。 张侨予的变化与进步证实了这一教材的效力。

对于在以"寓教于乐"为主的美国教育教学环境中就学的华人子女来说,马立平的教材非常适合他们的学习兴趣与学习方式。 但愿孩子们对学中文有兴趣,有效果,借助中文的学习刺激大脑的发育和意识的增长, 为在美国主体社会里学习, 工作, 和生活创造条件, 并在心目中留下一个对学习中文的自豪的, 永恒的,和愉快的记忆。
